27% of world coral reefs have been lost with estimation of another loss 32% within the following years. 80% of coral reefs in SouthEast Asia are considered threatened.

Coral reefs are among the most diverse ecosystems in the world. Although coral reefs cover only around 0.1 % of the ocean, they are home to 25% of marine species. They are also important nursery sites with many juvenile fish using reefs structures as secure hiding and feeding places.

Community Approach

Factors which causing coral loss include pollution, sedimentation, over-fishing, climate change and physical damage such as blast fishing and cyanide fishing.

In 2019, EcosystemImpact started a small community-based project to protect and restore Simeulues’ coral reefs. Six fishers and divers were selected and trained to understand the importance of reefs from a conservation perspective. We are in the process of building coral nurseries at five locations across Simeulue and its outer islands.
