Edible Ecosystems, Foraging and Permaculture

Our garden is a thriving hub of yummy fruit and Vegetables. Help in the garden consists of planting seeds, weeding, tending to the compost, feeding the chickens, and harvesting fresh fruits and vegetables. There will also be a basic introduction to sustainable organic farming in the tropics as it incredibly different from gardening in temperate climates.

Garden work will often be carried out with local children as part of the Nature Club. We aim to provide environmental education to local kids, whilst providing a yummy meal.

In the local village, foraging is part of daily life. Although most food is bought in the market place or supermarket, there is an abundance of wild-growing plants that are integrated into local diets as they have been for centuries. After harvesting Pakis we bring it back to Mahi-Mahi’s kitchen and learn how to prepare and cook it in a delicious peanut sauce.

To forage the Pakis, we will take a hike through a local village, past the subsistence agricultural areas, and up into the jungle. Whilst on the foraging walk, we will discuss and learn about local farming techniques, the species of plants that are grown and their uses. We aim to link local knowledge with our own gardening methods, and in turn, provide a space for education and sharing.
